Looking Back....

We were looking through old pictures today and found this from a few years ago. This is a phonics game that we found at our local dollar store. Many of us don't think to check dollar stores for materials, but over the years, we've found some really great steals from our local dollar stores.

Not only did we forget about having these pictures, but we realized how much we've all grown up over the years. As for me, I realized that yes, I've had some days where, I didn't think I could homeschool my children once they got older, but as you can tell that's possible because we are still going strong. Sure, we've had our ups and downs, but definitely worth it!

Our oldest has graduated and off to college soon, we now approaching our next year with 8th, 6th, 5th, 4th graders. So, yes it's definitely challenging, and yet priceless to know that your children reaching their full potential.

Bowling & Doing Math

Many of us like to bowl, but some like to bowl, no matter how. Well, we have the Bowling Dice Game. At first, I was thinking this was going to be an easy games, but quickly turned into my son beating me in this game. So, it's not as easy as I thought and is just as fun as a Bowling Lane.

Of course you roll the dice and keep score. This is a great way to get your struggling Math learner into enjoying it again. As well as having fun doing so.

It's easy enough for a 6 year old as well as and a 8 year old. I had my 6 year old write the amount of pins being rolled and had my 8 year sum the total in each frame. You can play with to make this into a fun Math lesson.

Letter of the Week “D”

My little man recently turned 5 in November. So, he’s a late 5 year old, but some things he already knows. So, I’ll start him with Pre-K and mixing Kindergarten resources in as well. I think with the combination of both will allow him to move from here to first in no time.

We started a different approach for “The Letter of the Week.” We’re doing file folders and pocket charts from Ana at Ingles 360. The other approaches are great resources, but it just wasn’t a good fit for my little man.

I learned a lot about my little man today because I had to step away from him three times to tend my other children. He has one thing that I don’t have and that’s patience. When I returned, I found him still sitting patiently waiting. I felt so bad that he had to wait, but I believe tomorrow will be better because I now know that I need to give a lesson about moving on when my children see me working with someone else. Then I thought maybe I need to create something that will work for when I’m tie up. I would have to think a little on that.

I decided to start my little man with “Hooked on Phonics.” I got a great deal and had to put it into good use. He enjoys our new toy because he bobs his head to the music during his lesson.

Story time is all about dinosaurs for the next couple of weeks. Today we started off with “Dinosaurs Babies by Lucille Recht Penner.” This is done as a group because I think it’s important to practice to listen as a group and learn to weed out distractions.

Dinosaurs will be the theme for the next 12 weeks. We’ll be learning about the 12 most common dinosaurs. This list is provided below:

My little man finished the day off with another file folder for Math. He worked on the Race Car Matching Game. Then he followed that up with a worksheet.

Active Math

Today was another task trying to get my 7 year old to do his math. I think we found a winner, and loads of fun. He has loads of energy, but a lot of right answers was the key.

We first started off with addition problems with my fingers. I would hold a certain amount of fingers on each hand and he would add them up. Then he would do jumping jacks, sit ups, hopping, or whatever came to mind. I then did some subtraction with flashcards and he did the same thing here as well.

We did our Science with the our vocabulary cube. This consist of throwing the big die in the air and landing on the floor, saying the word, going to the television stand to match the defintion to the word it landed on. I wrote out the definition onto construction paper. These definitions were from our plant study.

Spelling was a floor game. I laid out construction paper with letters (you will need double letters) on the floor. He would need to spell out the word (by hopping on the correct letter) that I ask him to spell which is words from his weekly spelling list. If he gets it wrong he will have to start over until he gets in right, but if he misses it 3 times then he has to write it 5 times on the board.
