Homiletics

I thought I would share this with you because I've been doing this for about 6 years now. I learned this while attending BSF (Bible Study Fellowship). I thought some of you may be looking for a way to study the Bible, but sure where to start and this will help you get started. As well as studying the word of God.

There are 7 steps and they are as follows:

Step 1:

Pray

Step 2:

Read Scripture aloud and note the 5 W’s (who, what, where, when and why)

Step 3:

Summarize the verse, summarize in 5 words or less and don’t worry about grammar and try to make a complete sentence, but without judgment. Don’t forget to keep key information. You also can group verses together without losing vital content.

Step 4:

Divisions, after you summarize all verses, pick out clear divisions of the subject matter and write a brief summary sentence.

Step 5:

Summary Sentence, This is the most difficult part, but in only 10-15 words make an attempt to write a clear and complete (use your grammar skills here) summary sentence.

Step 6:

Lessons & Truths, Answer these few questions:
What is God teaching you in this passage?
What do you think you are told to do in this passage?
What do you think you are told not to do in this passage?
What kind of thinking does this passage encourage you to do?

Step 7:

Application, this is the final stage, meditate on what you’ve read and learned, then write down how you will apply these teaching in your life, how you will act and think differently. What kind of action do you think God wants you to make from His teaching today?
