This fact sheet is nice way to learn about the fun facts about each dinosaur as we learn them. We’re using this fact sheet for each dinosaur. This has various questions to help your child learn the fact about each dinosaur as you explore them. I hope you enjoy this as much as we have.

Our New Schedules

I made a couple of changes this year. I've decided that we’re moving from the public school schedule to our own. We’re now moving to January to November because we love to celebrate the holiday’s to the fullest. So, we’re doing individualized schedules and working with regular folders.

As you can see, the folder has a list of what subjects they’re to do each day. Then on a separate sheet of paper, they look for their name and scroll to the subject in question to find what they need to do for that subject. It will normally be in order unless they decide to hop around, but the idea is to maintain structure through self taught. I’ll also put sticky notes for more detail if needed or a simple note saying, “See Mom.”
These folders are working out great for us. I think the kids are really enjoying these. I see less and less walking away from their work. The same goes for playing around. Most of all they are all more focused.

This Week’s Bible Lesson-Creation

I haven’t found the right resource to do a bible lesson with my children. We were doing verse memory for our copywork, but they need more than that. Recently, I came across weekly bible study lesson plans that fit our needs. Click here to get your free from Bible Study Planet.

We do this as a group session for our first subject of the day. This week we’re learning about God’s Creations. We learned Genesis 1:1-2:25 and did a coloring worksheet. My older children copied our bible verse into their Bible Journals from the whiteboard.

Accomplished

It was a great day for my second grader. He tends to be the last one to complete his work, but with the new schedules, he was the third one done. It’s not a race, but when he use to be done close to dinner time, it can be frustrating for the both of us.

He worked on Prefixed through a file folder game. He was able to work on this without my elp. That’s huge for him because he’s so depended on me to sit with him. He actually told me, “I can do it by myself.” Talk about breakthrough. I think we’re both happier.

He chose to read “Hour of the Olympics” in the Magic Tree House series. He had already read “Dinosaurs before Dark” last year. He’s now up to Chapter 3 because he had started reading it over the weekend.

Math was another accomplishment. He paid attention for the most part during the oral lesson. He completed the worksheet on his own without any problems, even without me sitting next to him. As well as getting them all right.

He moved up a level for Hooked on Phonics. He’s now on level 3 and this also seems to be fairly easy. There’s a few words that he was stuck on. However, he’s still learning a few new words.

This is the most shocking for me because we've struggled with handwriting since we began homeschooling. We've had a few approaches that have worked, but not to the point that he finished in 10 minutes. His average has been 30 minutes or longer. Either it’s too easy or he’s start to come around. This was the same for his spelling as well.

Keeping Up

Apparently, I’m not planning enough for my fifth grader because he finishes so fast. He’s so determined to get caught up because he completed his work early today. When we first began homeschooling he wasn’t able to read because he didn't talk much. He’s opened a lot since then and is making so much progress. After several approaches, he’s now reading at a second grade level.

Last year, we used Reading Eggs, Progressive Phonics, and lots of books from the library. Now he’s working on level 2 of Hooked on Phonics. I’m so proud of him. He’s really has come a long way since the beginning.

He can do a full notebooking page. He shows interest in his learning, determined to learn, shows pride in his work. However, he tends to over do it sometimes. He will do more than assigned.

He’s more of a visual/hands-on kind of learner. So, we tend to do a lot of his lessons on the whiteboard or hands-on learning activities. His phonics is done with tiles three times a week. Math is done through whiteboard lessons and manipulatives.

High School Breaking Point

This is our first year homeschooling High School. This is by far the hardest ever for me because my son doesn’t want to be homeschooled. He only wants to do 1-2 pages a day. He also gives me a hard time about what subject he’ll do. It always begins with an argument that I actually think a debate class would be great for him.

Well, I think he’s starting to accept the fact that he’s homeschooled. His attitude has changed. I’m not saying it completely turned around, but our heads aren’t bumping together and we argue less and less.
He did complete a full notebooking page without complaining. He also did his math without losing it. I also saw a total change in his writing. I can now read it and he’s writing more than asked.

The only thought that comes to my mind is faith because the power of prayer speaks for itself. He’s had a rough couple of years in middle school that he basically didn’t learn anything those years. I think he finally feels structure with his education and is coming back out of his shell. We’re both a happier camper.
I’ve been using notebooking with him since September. I think it settles with him because the layout is great for him. After three years of chaos in the public school system, Debra’s program is great for being structure back into an education for my struggling learner.

Recently, I had the opportunity to review Jimmie’s Designing your Language Arts Curriculum and Essay Tune Up. Language Arts can be difficult for all grade levels, but Jimmie’s Notebooking Success eBook taught e how to use notebooking for our homeschooling. So, I know with using living grammar will also help me with my son.

I tried her tips today with my son and it helped because he asked me about his D.O.L. (Daily Oral Language). I think he was excited because it’s now less work on his plate. I believe its better this way because he’s learning from his mistakes. As Jimmie states, “grammar books are a great resource, but why not live the language?”

As well as writing an essay because it’s been awhile for me. With these 7 formulas and the planning sheets provided in this eBook. I’m now off to a great start to refreshing my skills and as well as helping my son. He’ll take these skills with him for the years to come.

The Language Arts eBook has a lot of resources for me to teach my children well. I think with notebooking and these new suggestions, I can see some nice changes headed our way over the years to come. I strongly suggest getting these 3 eBooks while they are on sale and start your year off to a good start. Living language really is the best way for all of us. I know for me it won’t help just my children, but me as well.

Right now you can get all 3 of these eBooks for $11

Taking it Easy

This is a light week for us. We’re doing reviews because we've been on break for the holidays. They are enjoying the extra time with their Christmas gifts. I’m refueling for the next couple of months.

I created a few worksheets for this week. We’re reviewing with some of our file folder games. We’re pulling out our lapbooks and reviewed those. The main reviewing is being done on the whiteboard. They all are doing well of course, but I think this schedule isn’t really for us. With two months of holidays makes learning difficult.
Skip Counting

Double Digit Subtraction Facts to 5 Addition Facts to 5 Subtraction Match Numbers Order Numbers Ordinals I seriously think this year we’ll change our schedule because of the holidays. I think it’s better to learn in a longer stretch. For instance, from January to November is nice because that’s about 10 ½ months. Where as from September to May or June is about 9 months with 2 holidays, 3 if you count Halloween.

Then I thought of summer break. I think a lot of field trips would be a great fit here. I figure if we spend January to May learning the difficult stuff. Then from June through September we would do our field trips. We’ll do lapbooks throughout these months. Then for October it will be reflecting and reviewing.

Just a few Ideas in mind:
Great America
Sears Tower
• Shed Aquarium
• Several Zoo’s in the area
• Children’s Museum
• Burpee Museum
• Discovery Center
• Medieval Times

You Can Read Review

I came across this "You Can Read" while learning more about the " Daily Learning Notebooks." My daugter really loves it. She gets really excited to see this when she opens her folder. This is well rounded packet because it builds upon sight words by coloring, writing, playing games, and more.

Update:

Its been a little over a month and she is now on set 5 of the "You Can Read." She retaining the what she has learned over the past couple of weeks. We are both happy with these sets.
